Rethink How We Develop and Promote Daviess County
What's Gone Wrong:
- We are falling behind other communities in Kentucky.
- Daviess County has a reputation of not being business friendly.
- Too many potential entrepreneurs feel shut out in Daviess County because they are not part of established business circles.
- Our Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is promoting property using old ideas, and does not have a modern marketing mindset.
- The people making the rules here don't seem to think there is a problem.
- The current Fiscal Court has done very little to improve the business climate here.
What Janie Will Do:
- Do the work, not just talk about streamlining and simplifying our Planning and Zoning process to make it more business friendly.
- Pass zoning amendments that make it easier for new businesses to start.
- Stop imposing requirements that don't make common sense.
- Make Planning and Zoning a partner, not an impediment for business.
- Implement Smart Growth – utilizing and developing better uses for our existing buildings and underutilized properties. We will take what we have and make it more useful and productive.
- Don't just move business from one side of town to another – repurpose and redesign.
- Janie will use her years of real estate and appraising experience for the benefit of the county.
- Evaluate what the county can do to provide or partner for cultural attractions, like a music venue to bring the community together and leverage our local talent.
- Recruit new businesses to locate here – SELL Daviess County with a marketing mindset.
- Put business-minded, experienced people on boards so the county can benefit from their expertise.
- Janie's plan to better maintain roads, bridges and ditches will give the county better 'Curb Appeal' to potential businesses and investors.
Janie will be a champion for REAL business growth, utilizing all resources and opening up the process so businesses can thrive and unleash our entrepreneurs. Janie has made an impact as a commissioner:
Janie's Proven Commitment
- Pushed the EDC to finally market vacant properties using signage.
- Advocated for professional marketing of available EDC property.
- Tried to get a major TV program personality to relocate here – could not get any interest from local leaders.
