Real Transparency and a Seat at the Table

Government Transparency and Open Meetings

What's Gone Wrong:

  • Too many decisions are made behind closed doors.
  • Too much reliance on fiscal court staff and not utilizing the other elected commissioners.
  • Public boards have the same group of people appointed over and over.
  • Public meetings allow limited input from citizens.
  • City and county frequently at odds and lack cooperation, particularly in the area of public safety.

What Janie Will Do:

  • Offer a County Wide Emergency Notifications App
    • Citizens Can Opt In to Receive Notifications
    • Provide Real Time Updates on Weather, Road Closures, Hazardous Spills, Boil Water Advisories, etc.
  • End the staff-driven, closed-door style of government.
  • Stop punting decisions to unelected people.
  • Involve ALL commissioners in major decisions, no more leaving elected officials in the dark.
  • Make more meetings public – encourage more open communication.
  • Share information early so people know what is being considered before final decisions are made.
  • Open public boards to more people – get input from new voices.
  • Use the Judge Executive's office to lead real cooperation with the City on emergency services and other shared priorities, becoming a champion of collaboration!

Janie will use her business experience and negotiation skills to lead to real transparency in county government. She has already showed leadership advocating for transparency:

Janie's Proven Commitment

  • Called out decisions that did not include commissioners.
  • Pressed for open discussions on issues that are sometimes avoided, i.e., library, animal shelter, board appointments.
  • Brought to the court's attention that commissioners must serve on monthly working committees, which no previous court had been doing.
  • Janie is the chair of the Emergency Preparedness Working Committee – started dialog with city and county first responders and emergency personnel to better protect our citizens.
