Maintenance of Creeks, Roads, Bridges and Ditches
What's Gone Wrong:
- Sixty-five county roads closed due to flooding, endangering lives
- Preventing people from getting to their homes and work
- Prevented first responders and caregivers from getting to those in need
- Roads that are crumbling and causing damage to vehicles and are dangerous to travel.
- Bridges that are unsafe and prone to washout.
- Ditches that are shabby, unkempt with tall grass and weeds, posing a safety issue, and makes it look like we don't care.
- Trash along roadways, particularly those enroute to the landfill.
- We have missed Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) money that could have been used for drainage repair.
What Janie Will Do:
- Put a line item with dollars in the county budget for drainage.
- Clean out Panther Creek
- Use our own road department staff
- Hire additional staff and purchase equipment needed
- Re-establish the Drainage Commission with qualified citizens with experience with drainage issues.
- Set up a Citizen's Hotline for road and drainage issues and act quickly to resolve issues.
- Regular meetings with agencies such as Kentucky Division of Water, Corps of Engineers, EPA.
- Hire a full-time road foreman that will:
- Regularly travel roads and take full photo and video inventory
- Proactively perform maintenance as needed
- Document issues so we can prove flood damage on roads and bridges
- Supervise regular scheduled mowing and cleanout of county ditches
- Create tough littering enforcement with fines for violators.
- Pay attention and act on funding opportunities for drainage and flood relief.
Safe, well-maintained roads and bridges are essential not just for convenience, but are essential for our economic well-being, both for business and agriculture. Janie has proven her commitment to improve our county's infrastructure:
Janie's Proven Commitment
- She has repeatedly advocated for budget dollars to be allocated for flooding and drainage mitigation.
- She pushed the Fiscal Court to move toward re-establishment of the Drainage Commission.
- It was Janie's idea for the court to meet with area farmers to discuss flooding concerns, however Judge Castlen did not allow Janie to attend.
- Janie held town hall meetings on both the west and east side of Daviess County to listen to citizen's concerns about flooding and drainage.
