My Animal Shelter Plan

I want to create a better, more responsive animal shelter—one that offers convenient and friendly service to our community, values our volunteers and staff, and collaborates with other fosters and rescues for the benefit of the community.

Hiring the right person as our shelter director will be the key to success. A person who is experienced, dynamic and caring to promote our shelter and services, run a clean and friendly facility, and truly provide for the welfare of animals.

I will contract with a veterinarian for several days per week to do low cost spay and neuter for all of the Daviess County Residents. The is the best way to help the overpopulation of unwanted animals.

Adoption Counseling

I will hire an adoption counselor. Someone to explain to adopters the lifelong commitment that comes with pet ownership. To counsel them on the best type of pet for their lifestyle. And fully explain that there is a period for patience and understanding as the pets adjust to their new homes.

Community Outreach and Social Media

I will hire a community outreach person and social media marketer. Someone very specialized and talented who understands that to showcase the pet in the best light will increase interest and adoptions.

Animal Welfare and Care

I will hire our own community vet tech graduates. They can provide much needed assistance to the shelter vet with routine care and medical treatments, as well as assisting with spay and neuter. Vet techs can also provide trained and compassionate care to help with triage of injured animals, helping fill the gap of the vet shortage for emergencies.

Support for Volunteers

I will hire a volunteer coordinator. To insure the volunteers are treated with the appreciation and respect they deserve. We will offer flexible hours to enable more volunteers to participate. And make substantial updates to the play pens for usability.

Enrichment and Adoption Events

I will be a champion for adding activities to provide enrichment to the animals, and assistance with adoption events.

Facility Conditions

Keeping the shelter clean and well maintained will be a top priority. And I will make sure we have the staff and amenities necessary.

I have been advocating for animals my whole life, and as your Judge-Executive I will ensure that we do right by our animals and the people that love them. When we care for those who can’t speak for themselves, we prove the heart of local government still beats STRONG- with compassion.
